How do I program my Catalyst to use a digital cell phone?

Most digital cellular phones cannot transmit or receive data via the RJ11 phone jack. The only exception among the Telular product group that we use is the Phonecell SX5e GSM 850/1900. Therefore, when using a Catalyst coupled with a Cellularm, this is the phone to select. There are, however, a number of configuration issues to deal with both on the phone and on the Catalyst.

First, lets deal with the phone. When setting up service, the user should specify a SIM chip that has CSD (circuit switched data). This will result in a service with a voice only phone number plus a second, data only, phone number, and perhaps an analog FAX number as well.

For calls to the Catalyst

  • For a voice report, the voice only number would be dialed.
  • For calls to the Catalyst from a PC running Alarmware, the data only number would be used.

For calls from the Catalyst, the Phonecell must be configured as follows:

     1. Modulation must be set to a Baud Rate of 9600. This is accomplished by plugging a telephone handset into the voice jack and entering # * 114 * 4 # after hearing a dial tone.

     2. Air Interface Data Rate must be set to a Baud Rate of 9600 and Error Correction must be set to none. This is accomplished by plugging a telephone handset into the voice jack and entering # * 115 * 1 * 7 # after hearing a dial tone.

     3. The RJ-11 voice jack must be configured for analog data. This is accomplished by plugging a telephone handset into the voice jack and entering # * 113 * 1 * 0 # after hearing a dial tone. This switches the data communication from the 9 pin connector to the RJ-11 connector.

With this configuration the Catalyst will default to analog data on all outgoing calls to remote data terminals, fax machines, email and alphanumeric pagers.

In order to place voice calls, the analog data mode must be bypassed. This is accomplished by inserting a bypass string in front of all voice destinations in the Catalyst. The bypass string is # * 19 * 0 # <pause> 1 + (area code and phone number to be called).

After a voice call, the Phonecell SX5e will return to the analog data mode.
